Bishop Arts District

October 11, 2010

This summer, my parents came up for a weekend visit. My mom had read a magazine article about the Bishop Arts District over in the North Oak Cliff area of Dallas and wanted to check it out.

This is a previously run-down area that has, and is still undergoing a big revitalization.

As we drove through some rough looking neighborhoods, I was wondering how in the world my mom had talked me into coming down there. And then, I spotted this neat little area of shops and restaurants.

The funky, hip type feel to it reminded me of some of the neighborhoods in Austin.  It is a fairly small area, only taking up a few blocks.

We strolled the tree-lined streets, stopping in at the little boutiques and a couple of galleries along the way.

These weren’t your  retail chain stores, they were independent little shops.

One of my favorite shops that we visited  was The Soda Gallery.

They sell all kinds of sodas. Sodas that you can’t find just any where.  My dad found a soda there that he hadn’t had since he was a kid.

The smells wafting out of the restaurants smelled divine. We were there in the late morning, so the area wasn’t crowded, but I can imagine that at night things really get hopping.

This wall mural commemorates the old days when the Bishop Arts District was a busy stop on the trolley line.

I had started out the day with nervous reservations, but I left happy that I had come.
