Snow Day!

Snow is definitely not a common occurrence here in Texas. When it does happen, it is a big deal to children, and even some grown-ups too.

A white Christmas is especially rare for us. North Texas woke up to its first white Christmas in 83 years back in 2009. That is how uncommon snow is here in the Lone Star State.

Today, we received about three inches of snow where I live.

The neighborhood children, dressed in their boots and winter hats, happily took advantage of this rare opportunity to play in the snow. It reminded me of my childhood, when my mom would bundle us up so that we could head outside, and try to scrape enough snow together to build a decent snowman. I think we actually spent longer getting ready to go out, than we did out in the snow. We didn’t have snow boots. My mom would cover each of our shoes with plastic garbage bags to protect our feet from the cold, wet snow. I will say that this was a little embarrassing, but if that’s what it took to be able to play in the snow, then that’s what we did.

So, did I get out today, and enjoy the snow myself? I have to confess that I enjoyed the snow from inside my cozy, warm apartment dressed in my pj’s all day long. It takes more than three inches of snow for me to strap a pair of garbage bags on my feet these days!
