Belated Birthday Recap

Happy Monday, y’all! Hope you all had a fantastic weekend. I know that we sure did. The weather was gorgeous, although 97° doesn’t exactly scream Fall. Oh well, it will be chilly soon enough, and then I’ll be wishing for the 90° weather. 🙂

Anyway, I mentioned before that my parents were coming up to see us on Saturday. They wanted to take us out for a belated birthday dinner for my husband. His birthday was week before last. They did the same for my last birthday.

We met them over in Mckinney (a suburb about forty minutes north of Dallas) and started our afternoon off with a cup of coffee at Starbucks. After we left there, we headed to Pier 1, then TJ Maxx for a little retail therapy. I was trying to be all Maxxinista-like and find me a new purse, but they didn’t have anything that I really liked. Guess I’ll have to wait and be a Maxxinista some other day. 🙂

Once we were done there, we decided to head to dinner before the crowds got there. After doing a quick search on Yelp, we decided to try out Matt’s.

Up until Saturday, I figured Matt’s was probably a Grill & Bar type place based on the name, but it’s Tex-Mex. I had never actually been close enough to the restaurant to see that it said Rancho Martinez in small letters underneath Matt’s.

Their menu had some different choices on it than most Tex-Mex places. I’m not sure if I’ve ever seen catfish on the menu at a mexican restaurant. I chose the Rustler’s Salad with chicken. My husband had the same salad, only he got seared beef tenderloin with his. After tasting a couple of slices of his beef, I wish that I had chosen the same. The chicken was good, but the beef was much better. Sorry, I was too hungry to take a pic!

From there, we drove over to one of my favorite shopping centers for dessert. We were a little bummed when we got there because they had a Food Truck Fest going on. That’s something that my mom and I both want to do. Bummer! We consoled ourselves with a little Froyo.

Unfortunately, it wasn’t the best frozen yogurt we’ve ever had. The only sugar-free option was vanilla and it didn’t really have any flavor. Fortunately, there is a chocolate shop that my mom likes right across the street from it.

Our first trip to Sublime was last Christmas, and the chocolates here are amazing! They were actually featured in D Magazine as the Best Chocolate in Dallas back in February! The chocolatier, Troy Easton, actually went to school for law, but he enjoyed making meals and decadent desserts for friends and family so much that he decided to pursue his true passion instead. He did eventually earn a JD in law.

My mom had us all pick out some chocolate to have with our coffee later in the evening. They box their chocolates up in a super nice box for you.

My parent’s aren’t the biggest Starbucks fans (crazy, I know!) so I thought we could try a different coffee shop called Saxbys that none of us had been to before. The reason we had Starbucks earlier in the day was because it was the closest one, and even though my dad might hate their coffee, he loves their lemon cake.

My husband and I both got Iced Americano’s. Eh, definitely not Starbucks. However, the pistachio chocolate that I chose was wonderful. Smooth and not too sweet. I hate overly sweet desserts. I would choose it again for sure!

After spending some time chatting on the patio there, we dropped them back off at their car and said good night. It was a wonderful day! Thanks Mom and Dad!
